The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles may be separated by just one game in the standings. But there might as well be an ocean between these two considering the way each team has played as of late.

The Eagles, despite a rocky start, come off their bye week 4-4 and remain, of course, the defending Super Bowl champs. The Cowboys, America’s Team, look more like America’s Chumps after a thumping at the hands of the Tennessee Titans. Their 3-5 record has imperiled the futures of head coach Jason Garrett and inconsistent starting quarterback Dak Prescott and resulted in heavy criticism of general manager (and team owner) Jerry Jones.

That leaves this team desperate and down heading to a showdown with its NFC East rival. A loss here would all but eliminate the Cowboys from both division and playoff contention.

But the game is just as important for the Eagles, who are looking to reassert themselves in the division. Their nonconference schedule is brutal in the second half, with games against the Saints, Rams and Texans. Should they lose all three, they may need to sweep their five remaining divisional games both to win the East and to sneak their way back into the postseason. Capturing this Cowboys game is a must with a trip down to New Orleans looming next on the horizon.

Three Things to Watch

1. Which newly acquired receiver will make a bigger impact?

The first two drives of last week’s game for the Cowboys made it seem that Amari Cooper was primed for a breakout performance. He caught the first touchdown and was targeted three times, catching two of them for 15 yards.

But a second potential Cooper TD catch was intercepted by the Titans’ Kevin Byard early in the second quarter. After that, it felt like the trade pickup from the Raiders was never a part of the game in quite the same way. Five catches for 58 yards won’t make him the new Dez Bryant in Cowboy land, especially considering the first-round pick the team gave up for him. If anything, Cooper is even more of a focal point now after Bryant signed a one-year deal with the Saints this week.

Golden Tate, meanwhile, is under less pressure for Philadelphia as he eases into a talented receiving corps. Tight end Zach Ertz and wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, both in the mix for potential Pro Bowl honors, should open up some lighter coverage for Tate. His 44 catches for 517 yards thus far this season could have him in line for a 1,000-yard season if chemistry with quarterback Carson Wentz sparks early.

“He’s a smart guy,” Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said. “One of the things that you see on film with him is his first-step quickness. We all know about the yards after catch [Tate has led the league in that category since 2014]. He’s strong.”

Most importantly, Tate’s speed should open up the field and potentially stretch the defense enough to help the Eagles run game. A beaten-up offensive line combined with the loss of Darren Sproles and Jay Ajayi to injuries has put the pressure all on Wentz. It would be good for Philly’s offensive balance if a few deep catches by Tate open up some lanes for Corey Clement and Wendell Smallwood to run.
2. Did the bye get some ailing Eagles healthy?

That’s what the team is hoping. Darren Sproles, despite suffering a setback in practice, is expected to play for the first time since the season opener. A nagging hamstring has dogged the future NFL Hall of Famer, and the Eagles have missed his explosiveness and change of pace in the running game, especially with Ajayi out for the season. Corey Clement, despite a midweek illness, is also expected to suit up. He’ll be better in a lesser role.

But the most important component to watch is the offensive line. Coach Doug Pederson claims that Lane Johnson will likely play despite a sprained MCL expected to keep him out a few more weeks. Pro Bowler Jason Peters has also had a bye week to recover from his biceps injury. Their struggles have led to an inconsistent, ever-changing line that has kept Wentz on the run a little too often this season.

On defense, cornerback Jalen Mills appears to be out for Sunday’s game, but considering his shoddy performance this season, perhaps it’s better if he sits one out. An Eagles secondary that has given up big plays will need to rein it in with Sidney Jones, Ronald Darby and the overachieving fourth-round pick Avonte Maddox.

3. Can Dallas do it with defense?

The last time the Cowboys came to Lincoln Financial Field, they put together a 6-0 shutout in the 2017 regular-season finale. Now, it was a meaningless game that simply caused Eagles fans to get antsy over Nick Foles starting for the team during the playoffs. (Turns out practice did make perfect.)

But the Cowboys showed strengths in that game that have carried over to 2018. They’re allowing just 18.9 points per game, best in the NFC, along with 317.0 yards allowed. Demarcus Lawrence has led the way with 6.5 sacks, and the front is limiting rushes to 3.55 yards per attempt, second in the NFL.

But where the Cowboys need to be better on defense is simple: takeaways, especially with an offense that’s been struggling to gain steam under Prescott. They have just eight takeaways all season and a turnover margin of minus-2, good for just 21st in the league.

The Eagles, who have 12 giveaways and a margin of minus-5, will provide ample opportunities. Their season has been defined by poor decisions in close games that have caused momentum-swinging turnovers.

Big plays on defense, especially early, could help catapult a Dallas offense that’s been the focal point for negative fan chatter. Ezekiel Elliott has just 94 yards in his last two games, averaging less than three yards per carry. Prescott, Cooper and the entire Cowboys receiving corps have been the lightning rods for criticism over this season-long slump. Giving them a lead to work with is imperative.

Final Analysis

The Cowboys appeared to be reeling after the Titans game this week with Jerry Jones repeatedly answering questions surrounding the futures of Garrett, the rest of the coaching staff and even Prescott. It feels like a building distraction that this team doesn’t have the raw talent to overcome.

They’re also running into the buzzsaw of the Eagles coming off a bye, playing at home and recognizing that their margin for error is near zero if they hope to recapture the NFC East. It’s also given Wentz another week to recover from last season’s ACL injury that really hasn’t hampered him upon his NFL return. The last four games, he’s totaled 10 touchdowns and one interception, and his lowest QB rating in that span has been 115.3.

Add in Tate and Sproles, and a revitalized Eagles offense seems like too much to overcome. The Cowboys defense will only be able to do so much if their offense can’t score.

Prediction: Eagles 24, Cowboys 10

The Seattle Seahawks (4-4) and the Los Angeles Rams (8-1) will get together at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for their second meeting of the season. Both teams are coming off tough losses, but after the horrific tragedy in Thousand Oaks, California, on Wednesday where 13 people lost their lives in a mass shooting, it puts things in perspective that football is a game and can bring communities together at the same time. Expect the atmosphere at the Coliseum on Sunday to be very emotional and electric as it will be a great opportunity for the Rams and their fans to show a strong united front to the world.

Seattle was manhandled physically in a 25-17 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in a game that was not as close as the final score would indicate. Chris Carson got off to a nice start in the first quarter rushing the ball for 40 yards but left the game with a hip injury. Russell Wilson reverted to his form during the first two weeks where he took too many unnecessary sacks instead of throwing the ball away. The defense couldn’t slow down Phillip Rivers as the Chargers threw for 226 yards and found a way to get timely big plays in the running game from Melvin Gordon. Also, the loss to the Chargers was the first home loss against an AFC team since a 34-12 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 30, 2011.

The Rams suffered their first loss of the season last week by a score of 45-35 to the New Orleans Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Rams ran into an offensive buzzsaw as Drew Brees shredded their secondary for 346 passing yards and four touchdown passes. Alvin Kamara was another problem for Los Angeles as Kamara rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns, which was enough to keep the Rams defensive line at bay. Jared Goff did a very good job of getting Los Angeles back in the game during the second half as Goff threw for 391 yards along with three touchdown passes and one interception. Todd Gurley was kept in check running the football as rushed for 68 yards on 13 carries and should have been utilized a little bit more as 13 touches is not enough for Gurley.

Seattle at Los Angeles Rams

Three Things to Watch

1. Seahawks’ wide receivers against Rams’ secondary

With the issues that Marcus Peters has had in recent weeks for Los Angeles you can expect Seattle offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to go after Peters and the rest of the Rams secondary. The idea of putting together sustained drives is great on paper, but the Seahawks wide receiver trio of Doug Baldwin, David Moore and Tyler Lockett is going to have to play well Moore caught three passes for 38 yards and two touchdowns in Week 5 against the Rams. Lockett also caught three passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. If they can get separation against press coverage it will set Wilson up to try and launch a few medium to long passes to stretch the Los Angeles defense out. If they don’t and the offensive line struggles against Aaron Donald, then all bets are off.
2. Pound the rock with Todd Gurley

Gurley should see the ball at least 25 times on Sunday between running and catching balls out of the backfield. In the teams’ first meeting, Gurley rushed for 77 yards on 22 carries and scored three touchdowns. In addition, Gurley caught four passes for 36 yards against the Seahawks defense. K.J. Wright should end up getting assigned to Gurley in pass coverage and that will be a great one on one matchup all afternoon long. The fly sweep is going to be a weapon for head coach Sean McVay against the Seattle defense. Wide receiver Robert Woods rattled off 53 yards on a pair of fly sweep runs during the first meeting in Seattle this season. Expect that fly sweep implemented within the first two series to get the Seahawks on their heels quickly on defense.

3. Jared Goff vs. Seahawks’ secondary

The Seahawks secondary had an up and down afternoon in their first matchup with Goff this season. Goff threw for 321 yards, but Seattle did come up with two interceptions at key moments. Patience is going to be important for the Seahawks secondary as they are going to give up yards what they can ill afford to do is give up too many chunk plays on Sunday. Wide receiver depth should also play to Goff’s advantage as Cooper Kupp and Brandin Cooks are going to have advantages over Shaquill Griffin and Justin Coleman, the cornerbacks for Seattle. Goff will methodically pick apart this Seahawks secondary over the course of four quarters and get another 250-300-yard type of performance.

Final Analysis

This will be a fascinating game to watch unfold as both teams have a sense of urgency to get this win for multiple reasons. First, Los Angeles needs to keep pace with the Saints as it doesn’t look like they are slowing down anytime soon. Next, Seattle needs this to avoid a second two-game losing streak this season and to get back over the .500 mark. Keeping the game close and getting it to the fourth quarter will provide the best chance to win for the Seahawks. They are going to have to avoid the catastrophic turnover that results in a defensive touchdown. So ball security and sound decision making by Wilson are going to be vital this week. Bottom line, Seattle is going to give a solid effort, but they will fall short against the Rams on Sunday. On the other side, Los Angeles will be able to keep pace with the Saints in the race for home field advantage in the NFC playoff picture and also bring at least a little bit of joy to the community by winning their ninth game this season.

The Miami Dolphins and the Green Bay Packers come into Sunday’s matchup at Lambeau Field in similar situations: Both teams have lost three of their last five games and are fighting for playoff spots.

The Packers find themselves in rather unfamiliar territory as a franchise. Green Bay is currently sitting below .500 after finishing the previous year with its first losing record (7-9) since 2008, all while having arguably the most talented quarterback in NFL history. I said most talented, not best ever. There’s a difference.

Whether or not Aaron Rodgers can rally the Pack to another playoff berth like he did after the team’s slow start in 2016 remains to be seen, but wholesale changes to the coaching staff, and perhaps even the front office, now seem inevitable after the final whistle blows on the 2018 season.

The Dolphins’ 3-0 start had them looking like early contenders for the AFC East throne. Those aspirations were shot down with a 38-7 Week 4 beatdown from the Patriots in Foxboro. The Fish have been struggling to swim since, winning only two games since their loss to the Pats, compounded by the loss of starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Despite their recent struggles, Miami is still in the hunt for a playoff spot with a semi-favorable schedule that features just two teams over .500 (Patriots, Vikings) and two games against the Bills in December.

Miami at Green Bay
Kickoff: Sunday, Nov. 11 at 4:25 p.m. ET
TV: CBS
Spread: Green Bay -9.5

Three Things to Watch

1. Osweiler under center

When Ryan Tannehill went down against Cincinnati with a right shoulder capsule injury, Brock Osweiler was given new NFL life — again. After two separate stops in Denver, a disastrous $72-million stretch in Houston and a trade to Cleveland, Osweiler found a backup gig and a one-year deal in Miami this past March. With Tannehill’s recent injury history, it wasn’t unlikely that his backup was going to see playing time.

Now, the Dolphins are on the outside of the playoff picture looking in with an offense that scores on only 31 percent of its drives and a quarterback who has never proven he can run an NFL offense — he’s completing fewer than 60 percent of his career passes and has nearly as many interceptions (30) as touchdowns (37) in 47 games.

In his first two starts replacing Tannehill, Osweiler looked like the quarterback the Broncos thought they were getting when they drafted him to be the future of the franchise in 2012. Osweiler threw for five touchdowns, completed 66 percent of his passes, posted a 104.9 quarterback rating and led the way to an upset victory against the Bears in overtime.

But despite beating the Jets 13-6 last week, the Miami offense has noticeably regressed in the last two weeks, averaging just 18 points (20.8 for the season as a whole). And in those two games, Osweiler looked like the quarterback that Houston couldn’t wait to get rid of in 2017, completing fewer than 60 percent of his passes with a 71.8 quarterback rating, one interception and no touchdown passes.

To keep their playoff hopes alive against the Packers’ aggressive pass defense, the Dolphins desperately need to rebound from their worst offensive performance of the season. Against the Jets, the Dolphins amassed a measly 168 total yards (34 in the second half), went 3-of-16 on third down and failed to score a touchdown for the first time this season. The fix starts with Osweiler. He doesn’t have to be perfect, but he at least has to find a way to convert on third downs to extend drives and keep Rodgers off the field.
2. Looking for points

The Dolphins’ offensive problems go beyond playing with a journeyman backup quarterback. In fact, Miami has struggled putting up points in the three seasons that Adam Gase has been at the helm, averaging 20.3 points per game since his arrival. This season, Miami ranks 24th in points per game, averaging only 20.8 points per contest — a slight uptick from last season’s 25th-ranked output of 17.6. But the problems don’t stop at scoring points. The Dolphins are one of the worst teams at moving the chains, ranking 20th in yards per play (5.6), 27th in third-down conversion rate (34 percent), 28th in time of possession (28:26) and 29th in first downs per game (16).

The biggest problem with Miami’s offense is health. So far this season, Miami has sent nine different players to season-ending injured reserve, five of whom are on the offensive side of the ball, including two offensive linemen. The already thin O-line could be without three more pieces this Sunday with center Ted Larsen, guard Laremy Tunsil and tackle Ja’Wuan James all listed as questionable. If the Dolphins’ front line can’t protect Osweiler or clear lanes for the already struggling rushing attack, it could be another offensive drought on Sunday.

3. Aaron Rodgers

Make no mistake, the six-time Pro Bowler, two-time All-Pro and two-time MVP is the main reason the Packers are even within earshot of a playoff spot. Nevertheless, while Aaron Rodgers’ 15 touchdown passes and one interception look great on paper, it’s also true that he has not performed to his usual excellent standards.

Rodgers is a career 64 percent passer, but he has only two games this season exceeding that mark. His 60 percent mark is the lowest of his career and currently ranks him 28th in the league. Rodgers’ quarterback rating currently sits at 98.9, his lowest in a full season since 2015 and only the second time in his career as a starter that the number has been under 100.

So what’s the deal? The lower-than-usual numbers for Rodgers could harken back to the amazing Week 1 comeback victory over the Bears on Sunday Night Football when Rodgers was sidelined with an MCL sprain only to return and lead the Packers to a fourth-quarter win. Since then, Rodgers has been slower, almost timid, outside the pocket where he normally thrives, and he has missed throwing windows he would normally thread the ball through.

So how do the Packers take the pressure off their ailing franchise quarterback? That answer is easy: Run the ball. Currently the Packers are 29th in pass-to-run ratio, with 159 more passing attempts (335) than rushing attempts (176) this year. Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin has the opportunity to alleviate Rodgers’ burden against his old team by giving running backs Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams a heavy workload, especially Jones, who boasts an impressive average of 6.0 yards per rushing attempt. With Jones and Williams leading the charge against a Dolphins defense that is fifth worst in yards per carry (4.8) and yards per game (136.1), Rodgers should be able to be effective without having to take too many deep shots against a Miami secondary that leads the league in interceptions.

Final Analysis

This game will come down to which floundering offense can right the ship the best, as both units are struggling to find answers. This is where the Packers have the biggest advantage with Rodgers calling the shots. With all three of their wins (and one tie) coming at the friendly confines of Lambeau Field, the Packers should be able to handle business against the Osweiler-led Dolphins.

The Los Angeles Chargers and the Oakland Raiders couldn’t be on opposite ends of the spectrum if they have tried. The Chargers are one of the hottest teams in the NFL, while the Raiders have been one of the league’s most disappointing.

After beginning the season 1-2, the Chargers have won five games in a row. Two of the Chargers wins have come on the road, including last week’s win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The Raiders have lost four games in a row as they’re tied with the New York Giants for the worst record in the NFL at 1-7. Last week, the Raiders suffered their most embarrassing game of the season — a 34-3 loss to the 49ers.

Sunday will be the second game of the season between the Chargers and the Raiders. On Oct. 7, the Chargers beat the Raiders 26-10 in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles at Oakland

Kickoff: Sunday, Nov. 11 at 4:05 p.m. ET
TV: FOX
Spread: Chargers -10

Three Things to Watch

1. Philip Rivers

Rivers has played like an NFL MVP candidate during the first half of the season. He ranks third in the league in quarterback rating as Rivers has thrown 19 touchdowns with just three interceptions. Against the Seahawks, Rivers completed only 50 percent of his passes, but he threw two touchdowns and zero interceptions.

If the Raiders are going to pull off the home upset, they will need to find a way to get pressure on Rivers. In eight games, the Raiders are dead last in sacks as they have just seven on the year. If the Raiders cannot generate any pressure on Rivers, it is going to be a long day for their defense.
2. Derek Carr
While Carr did not throw an interception against the 49ers last week, he was sacked seven times in the loss. He also completed 16-of-21 passes for 171 yards.

If Carr can remain upright, he will have an opportunity to gain yards against the Chargers defense. The problem is keeping Carr from getting sacked. He has been sacked 24 times in eight games, which averages out to three sacks per game.

“(If) you get an offensive line that’s healthy and playing great, it makes everybody’s job a lot easier,” Raiders head coach Jon Gruden said. “I’m not going to make any excuses. I think Derek is doing some good things. It does make things difficult when you have the amount of injuries that we have had. I just got a nice call from my brother (Redskins head coach Jay Gruden), he lost all his linemen the other day, too. Got eight games left, we have to continue to coach hard and find a way to improve.”

3. Raiders’ defense
Oakland’s defense was embarrassed by San Francisco on national television during its last outing. Things may not get much better against the Chargers on Sunday. The Raiders are ranked No. 27 in total defense as they’re giving up 407.1 yards per game. They also rank last in rushing defense as they’re allowing 144.5 a game on the ground.

Things won’t be easy this week as the Raiders will try to slow down running back Melvin Gordon. Raiders defensive coordinator Paul Guenther will undoubtedly have his hands full on Sunday.

Final Analysis

It is hard to see the Raiders pulling this victory off even with them at home. The Raiders’ defense has struggled, and their offense hasn’t performed much better.

Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon should have a field day against the Oakland defense. Also, except the Chargers to get after Derek Carr, who has been consistently sacked all season long. This game could get ugly.

Prediction: Chargers 37, Raiders 10

TITANS: Roster | Depth Chart | Stats

The New England Patriots improved to 7-2 with a 31-17 win last Sunday night against Green Bay. It is the seventh-straight season that the Patriots have started the season with a 7-2 or better record and the 10th time under head coach Bill Belichick.

A win this week against Tennessee will guarantee that New England finishes with a .500 or better record for the 18th consecutive season. New England is currently tied with the Cleveland Browns (1957-73) for the second-longest streak at 17 behind the Dallas Cowboys’ (1965-85) streak of 21-straight seasons of finishing with a record of .500 or better.

17 STRAIGHT SEASONS ABOVE .500

The New England Patriots enter this week’s game with a chance to lock up at least a .500 record for the 18th consecutive season. The Patriots are the only NFL team to finish with a record of .500 or better in each of the last 17 seasons (2001-17). Each of the other 31 NFL teams has had at least one losing season since 2001. The Patriots are currently tied with the Cleveland Browns (1957-73) for the second-longest streak at .500 or better, behind the Dallas Cowboys’ (1965-85) streak of 21 straight years.
SERIES HISTORY

The New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans (formerly the Houston Oilers) will square off for the 43rd time since the two charter members of the American Football League began play in 1960. The Patriots and Oilers played twice each year from 1960-1969 and have squared off 22 times since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. In those 22 post-merger matchups, the Patriots own a 15-7 record, including a 2-1 mark in playoff contests.

The New England and Houston/Tennessee franchises have met three times in the postseason. In 1978, The Houston Oilers beat New England, 31-14, in an AFC Divisional matchup in Foxborough. The Patriots beat the Titans, 17-14, in a 2003 postseason game to advance to the AFC Championship. Last season, the Patriots advanced to their seventh-straight AFC Championship Game with a 35-14 win in an AFC Divisional Playoff on Jan. 13, 2018, at Gillette stadium.

New England leads the all-time series 25-16-1. The Patriots have won the last seven times the two teams played. New England last played at Tennessee on opening day in 2012 and came away with a 34-13 victory.

PASSING PERFORMANCES

Tom Brady will face the Tennessee Titans for the seventh time in the regular season. He owns a 5-1 record and is 2-1 in games played at Tennessee. Brady has faced the Titans twice in the postseason and owns a 2-0 record in those games.

IF THE PATRIOTS WIN…

The Patriots will improve to 26-16-1 all-time against the Tennessee/ Houston franchise. In the Belichick-Brady era, the Patriots are 7-1 vs. Tennessee, including their most recent win, a 35-14 victory in an AFC Divisional Playoff last season.
The team will guarantee a .500 or better record for the 18th consecutive season, which is the second-longest streak in NFL history. The Patriots are the only team in the NFL to finish with a record of .500 or better in each of the last 18 years (2001-18).
The Patriots will have an 8-2 record through the first 10 games of the year, marking the 10th time in franchise history and fifth-straight year that the team has started the season with that mark or better. It will also be the ninth time under Bill Belichick that the team will have an 8-2 or better start. Six of the prior eight times, the team has advanced to the Super Bowl.
The Patriots will earn their 101st win on the road since 2000, improving to 101-48 (.678). They will also improve to 124-73 (.629) since the start of the 1994 season when Robert Kraft purchased the team, which is the best regular-season road record in the NFL in that time.
Tom Brady will extend his own record for most career wins in NFL history to 231 victories (regular and postseason).
It will mark the 204th regular-season win of Tom Brady’s career. He is currently in third place for most regular-season wins in NFL history.
Tom Brady will earn his 92nd road victory in the regular season, extending his own NFL record. Peyton Manning is second with 85 road wins.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR…

Tom Brady needs 4 yards rushing to reach 1,000 rushing yards in his career.
With 401 yards against the Titans, Tom Brady will become the NFL’s all-time leading passer (regular and postseason), passing Peyton Manning.
If Tom Brady throws three touchdown passes, he will tie Brett Favre for second-most regular-season touchdown passes all-time with 508. Peyton Manning is first with 539 touchdown passes.
With three touchdown passes, he will also tie Peyton Manning for most career touchdowns all-time (regular and postseason) with 579.
